GEORGES Another unique formation is the system of gorges and canyons that comprises the narrow valley of the river Stara Reka, the canyon of the Cherni Osam river, the valleys of the rivers Sokolna and Byala.
Because of its waterfalls, rapids and rocky gorges the river is labeled as the most spectacular river in Bulgaria with a total length of 37 km and a catchment area of 239 sq. km.
Dzhufar dere is formed by tree small rivers, the main of which descends from the southern slopes of the peak of Lepenyat. The gully itself climbs from the beginning of the Troyan-Karnare Pass to the Orlovo Gnezdo shelter, a tourist trail is marked along it that leads quickly to the main crest of the mountain.
The Malka reka River rising just under mountain peak Levski in the Troyan Mountain and the Golyama Reka River taking its source from the southern side of peak Jaltets north of mountain peak Kochmara are considered the source of the Stara Reka River.
It flows westwards forming the most beautiful canyon in Stara Planina – the fabulous Steneto, included in the reserve, bearing the same name. It is characterized by a number of caves, among which is the deepest one in Bulgaria – Raichova Dupka.
The upper flow of Tazha River shapes a deep and majestic river valley, which competes the Southern Djendem – the famous Tuja gorges that are 2.5 km long and 300 – 400 m deep.
