Central Balkan National Park Directorate celebrated the International Day of Biosphere Parks, November 3, with festival events

For the third year Ministry of the Environment and Water and its regional structures in cooperation with the National Committee for the MAB Program, note 3- th November as the International Day for Biosphere Reserves, announced by UNESCO MAB Programme. The date was chosen in 2021 by a Decision of the UNESCO General Conference of its 41st session. UNESCO's initiative to celebrate Biosphere Reserves Day is an invitation and an opportunity for everyone to be inspired and learn from the solutions and good practices already implemented in these UNESCO sites as model areas for sustainable development.
On the occasion of the International Day for Biosphere Reserves Central Balkan National Park Directorate held three festival events in the municipal centers of the transition zone of the Central Balkan Biosphere Reserve - in Troyan on October 19, in Sevlievo on October 26 and in Karlovo on November 2. The events are aimed at providing support for local producers, artisans, artists and popularizing the initiative "Partner of the Central Balkan Biosphere Reserve", launched in 2021, and the ideas of the MAB program. These festivals, involving the administration of the National Park, municipalities, local entrepreneurs - generally called friends of the Central Balkan Biosphere Reserve, contribute to making it a model of a working biosphere park, as well as an example of good interaction between people and institutions , joined their efforts to protect this territory with unique nature, rich cultural historical heritage and traditions. Within the framework of the festivals, certificates and awards were presented to the persons meeting the criteria for "partnership", who acquired the right to use the logo and brand of the Central Balkan Biosphere Reserve for marketing their products, on packaging, in their workplaces, on advertising their materials, etc.
In addition to the activities related to the International Day for Biosphere Reserves, on October 17-18, experts from the National Park participated in a scientific conference "Economy, politics, ecology in the historical perspective of the 20th-21st centuries" with the theme "Biosphere reserves - a tool for sustainable development of the regions. Prospects for the development of the network in Bulgaria following the example of the Central Balkan Biosphere Reserve. The scientific conference was organized by the Regional Historical Museum - Gabrovo.
There are four Bulgarian biosphere reserves on the territory of the country - Central Balkan, Red Wall, Srebarna and Uzunbudjak, announced in 2017 under the MAB Program of the international organization.
Biosphere reserves are territories symbolizing the harmonious coexistence between man and nature. In addition to zones for strict nature protection, "buffer" and "transitional" zones are also distinguished. They encourage the implementation of sustainable economic practices based on ecosystem services and the advantages of proximity to the protected area.
Their aim is to stimulate sustainable economic development of the respective regions, based on clean and preserved nature and the production and supply of certified local products.
Biosphere reserves are a unifying platform that ensures the participation of all interested parties in the management and decision-making of the respective territory.
