Today, October 4, we celebrate World Animal Day

04 October 2023
A brief history of World Animal Day

The concept of World Animal Day was brought to life by Heinrich Zimmermann, writer and editor of the German publication Man and Dog. Zimmerman organized the inaugural World Animal Day event on March 24, 1925, at the Sports Palace in Berlin, Germany. Records show the event was a resounding success, attracting over 5,000 attendees.

In his total dedication to the cause, Zimmerman devotes an extraordinary amount of time to promoting World Animal Day. His efforts bore fruit in May 1931, when his proposal to observe October 4 as World Animal Welfare Day was overwhelmingly approved at the Congress of the International Congress for the Welfare of Animals in Florence, Italy. The resolution was passed and since then the day has been observed worldwide as a day dedicated to animal rights and welfare.

Further expanding the reach of the event, the UK-based animal protection organization Naturewatch Foundation introduced the World Animal Day website in 2003.
