We will celebrate the International Day of Biosphere Parks with a festival in Karlovo
31 October 2025
On Sunday, November 2, the last of this year's autumn holidays of the Central Balkan Biosphere Park will take place in Karlovo. This is the third edition of the festival events of the Central Balkan, which are dedicated to the celebration of the International Day of Biosphere Parks - November 3.
The event in Karlovo will bring together craftsmen, producers, artists and nature lovers from all municipalities of the Biosphere Park. The program also includes creative workshops for children on candle making, knitting, decorating sweets, making soaps, mosaic, pottery wheel, sewing, eco-activities. Visitors will have the opportunity to experience traditional tastes, buy homemade products, handmade souvenirs, products with rose and lavender. Our green friends from the Natural History Museum - Cherni Osam and "Green Balkans" will also join the holiday and will enrich the knowledge of all visitors in a fun way. At a separate stand, the National Park staff will provide more information about the region’s UNESCO awards. The children of Karlovo will be able to participate in an art workshop “Children Draw Their Biosphere Park”, in which they will draw the characteristics of their region – nature, lifestyle, culture on a common children’s map-picture of the Biosphere Park.
This year, a campaign is running during the festivals, in which visitors are urged to take pictures of the event and send them to the organizers. In this way, they will be able to share with everyone their feelings about the holiday. And the collected materials will be used in campaigns to promote the festival events.
The Festival will start at 11:00 am on the “20th of July” square in front of the “Vasil Levski – 1861” public house, Karlovo. The musical program will begin at 11:30 am with performances by bands in front of the community center building. The event is being held with the kind support of the Karlovo Municipality.
November 3 has been designated as the International Day of Biosphere Reserves in 2021 by a Decision of the UNESCO General Conference. “Central Balkan”, “Red Wall”, “Silver” and “Uzunbudzhak” are the four Bulgarian biosphere reserves announced in 2017 under the UNESCO “Man and the Biosphere” Program. Their nomination a year earlier was supported by both local communities and responsible institutions.
Biosphere parks are territories symbolizing the harmonious coexistence between man and nature. Their goal is to stimulate sustainable economic development of the respective regions, based on clean and preserved nature, preserved culture, lifestyle and traditions, and the production and supply of certified local products. They are a unifying platform that ensures the participation of all stakeholders in the management and decision-making for the respective region.
