Golyam Kupen peak

ABOUT GOLYAM KUPEN PEAK
Its height is 2169 m. It is located along the main crest trail Dobrila hut – Botev Peak, which follows the watershed crest between the Troyan and the Kalofer mountains. Given the high avalanche risk it is not recommended for hiking in winter. For the alpine hikers it is a traverse of IVb category. In nice, clear weather it offers unforgettable vistas towards Northern and Southern Bulgaria. It is a section of the Kom-Emine hiking trail. West of it is located the peak of Ambaritsa, divided by it through the Platneshki Yarove saddle and the Malak Kupen. Golyam Kupen is one of the most impressive and beautiful Stara Planina mountain peaks. With its almost pyramidal shape it resembles somewhat the Alpine giants. Its climbing makes a definite challenge – one should know some climbing techniques, there is also a metal wire to support the climbers. The descending is not less difficult! It follows the steep narrow ridge directed Northeast. Several-hundred-meter abysses open to the North and to the East. Overcoming all the difficulties, one is on the narrow top plot, that can shelter no more than 10 people, and there you can sign in a special book, thus perpetuating your presence. South of the small saddle between Malak and Golyam Kupen the only lake in the Park is located.
