Krali Markova Dupka Cave
ABOUT THE CAVE
The great amount and intensity of the rainfall, the geological and relief characteristics are the reason for the intensive karst development in the Troyan Balkan. Besides the numerous hollows, whirlpools, potholes in the river valleys in Steneto reserve there are great variety of horizontal and vertical caves - various in size, technical difficulty and underground beauty. The unique rock bridge Krali Markova Hole is a cave in its last stage of its development when most of its limestone walls have been aeolated and “dissolved” in the water and such it became a passage cave, e.g. - rock bridge. In the words of local people inside the arch there is a small cave as well but it hasn’t been researched yet because the access is very difficult.
The rock bridge shelters different petrophilic birds, mammals, reptiles, spiders and insects. The peregrine falcon, the raven, the common buzzard, the black redstart, the eagle owl, the tawny owl, lots of bat species (the noctule, Leisler’s bat, Serotine, Savii’s bat, Daubenton’s bat, whiskered bat, barbastelle), dormice, lizards, etc.
Organizing of all kinds sport and alpine activities is prohibited because of the possible disturbance of the inhabitants of the rock bridge – moreover it is in the zone of the strict reserve Steneto in the Central Balkan National Park. For implementation of scientific research projects there it is necessary to be agreed with MoEW and the National Park Directorate in advance.
