Mountain peak Cherven

ABOUT MOUNTAIN PEAK CHERVEN
Mountain peak Cherven is 1221 m high. It is the highest of the peaks surrounding the town of Teteven. It is called Cherven meaning red because the rising sun shines on it and makes it look red. Of all Karst formations here the Yamata Abyss is the most interesting one. It is an abysmal cave with a depth of 27 m.
The peak was made famous by the legend of the Klucha (Key) spring. Stoyan the shepherd often played his wooden flute, which made him fall deep in a sleep beneath the peak. He would wake up late at night when the stars would have already covered the sky. Here the shepherdess Yanka, enchanted by the music of the flute dropped her key. Some time later that key reappeared in the waters of a spring that gushed in the center of the town of Teteven. That is why today the spring is called Kluch (Key).
The first decisive battle between the Russian Army lead by Colonel Orlov and the Turkish chief in Teteven took place in the historical Boteva mogila hill on 29 October 1877. Many died then. Since then the Golata mogila hill was called Boteva mogila hill. The next day – 30 October 1877 is officially considered as the first day of freedom in Teteven. In 1977 on the 100th anniversary of the events a monument was erected on the Boteva mogila hill.
