Red deer (Cervus elaphus)

More about the species

Impressing with its noble outlook, the red deer is the second largest European deer. The average body length of the males is 250 cm, and their shoulder length is 152 cm on the average, and the average weight is 235 kg. The females are smaller.

The fur is shord, reddish-brown in summer and darker – to gray-brown in winter. The young deer are spotted and often lay on the ground, so they are difficult to recognize.

The horns of the red-deer are imposing – reaching 91 cm and weighing up to 3 kg each. They are changed each year. This noble species is active at twilight, during the night and at dawn. It likes rolling in the mud. Out of the breeding season the males form small herds. The females with their young live in individual herds in small numbers.

Legends

In the ancient times the red deer has been considered helper of the shamans – there are a number of its pictures and small sculptures in caves, on rock faces and even in Medieval churches. According to the legends once a year – on the feast of St. Constantine and Helen – it came alone to be sacrificed. There is a ban on killing red deer, besides these sacrifices.

Distribution

Red deer is distributed almost everywhere in the Park. It prefers mixed broadleaved forests with a small glades within.
