“Local Action for Global Impact”
On 22 May, the world celebrates the International Day for Biological Diversity – a United Nations initiative dedicated to protecting the living world and promoting the sustainable use of natural resources. The theme for 2026 highlights that local actions are the driving force behind global progress toward the vision of “Living in harmony with nature by 2050.”
The campaign logo – a fingerprint in the colors of the Global Biodiversity Framework – symbolizes the individual contribution of every person and community. The expanding lines illustrate how small steps can lead to meaningful, far‑reaching change.
Central Balkan National Park is one of the richest biodiversity hotspots in Europe. It encompasses:

41% of Bulgaria’s plant diversity, including rare and endemic species

More than 300 species of vertebrates and over 2,350 invertebrate species

Some of the most significant primary beech forest massifs in Europe, recognized as part of the UNESCO World Heritage site “Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe”
Within the Park lie nine strict nature reserves – Boatin, Tsarichina, Kozya Stena, Steneto, Sokolna, Peeshti Skali, Stara Reka, Djendema and Severen Djendem – safeguarding unique ecosystems and natural processes.
Local initiatives – from scientific research and long‑term monitoring to educational programs and sustainable tourism – demonstrate how actions on the ground support global biodiversity goals.
