Tourism

The Management Plan of the Central Balkan National Park (2016-2025) - the main document for the management of the Park, designates a special zone "Environmental Tourism" for the service of visitors. It covers an area of 180 ha and includes tourist routes with a total length of 580 km.
The primary function of the Zone is to serve tourism and visitor management. In accordance with the traditions in Bulgaria and the main objectives of the protected area, it mainly promotes hiking tourism. It offers conditions for full recreation, spiritual enrichment and rest in a way that does not harm the natural environment.
Extreme sports such as mountaineering and rock climbing, horse riding, mountain biking, hang gliding and paragliding are possible only during certain periods of the year and at certain places and routes specified in the Management Plan.
The "Environmental Tourism" Zone is defined as a set of tourist routes and sites in the Park and the light tourist facilities serving them. It includes the paths (with a strip of 2 m on both sides), with pedestrian tourist routes located along them - summer and winter versions, excluding those that cross the reserves and remain in the "Reserves" zone. The passage of people through the reserves - including for educational purposes, is allowed only along paths marked by orders of the Minister of Environment and Water.
The "Eco-friendly Tourism" Zone also includes bivouacs - places designated for spending the night in nature using one's own equipment, places for lighting fires with designated areas for short-term relaxation - fireplaces, gazebos, benches, fountains, etc., specialized places and routes for interpretation and educational activities - eco-trails and interpreted routes, places and routes for alternative tourism and sports, for cultural and other traditional mass events, places for rest and viewing points designated along the pedestrian routes, as well as the regulated main and secondary entrances to the Park. The Zone also includes temporary tourist infrastructure - light wooden shelters, gazebos, benches, tables, etc.
Part of the Zone are the sites of cultural and historical heritage with an area of up to 100 m around them, as well as the roads - sites of cultural and historical heritage, with a territorial scope of 5 m on each side.
Although they fall into the "Infrastructure" Zone, all roads and parking lots in the Park, including those with free or limited access, are used for the purposes of hiking, cycling and horse riding. It is good to know that the huts and shelters that offer visitors the "accommodation" service also fall into the "Infrastructure" Zone and operate in accordance with the norms, regimes and conditions introduced for it.
The "Environmental Tourism" Zone offers a network of routes and sites that facilitate the stay of visitors, support their informed behavior in the protected area. Facilities and signs at the entrances to the Park and reserves introduce the riches and importance of the protected area, as well as the rules within it.
70 routes lead to remarkable places in the Park – centuries-old forests, spacious high-altitude meadows, rugged peaks, impressive waterfalls, panoramas of picturesque landscapes characteristic of the mountain relief. An attractive option is to cross the Park along the ridge of the Central Stara Planina, following the primary pedestrian route of the European system connecting the Black Sea with the rest of Europe, known as E3 Kom – Emine.
Specially constructed eco-trails and interpreted routes, the interpretation complex “The Forest”, the visitor information center “Vezhen” help to understand and experience nature in a natural and exciting way.
