A modification to the type of ribbon marking used along hiking trails traversing protected areas designated as Reserve and Managed Reserve is envisaged

30 January 2026

By Order RD‑11/07.01.2026, the Minister of Environment and Water establishes the means for marking the protected areas in the Republic of Bulgaria, intended to ensure clear, accurate and unambiguous indication of their category, boundaries, regimes and designated routes, with the purpose of regulating access, enabling control, and ensuring orientation and safety.

The Order provides for a change in the type of ribbon marking used along hiking trails that pass through protected areas classified as ‘Reserve’ and ‘Managed Reserve’. Sections of trails traversing these two categories of protected areas are expected to be re‑marked with three consecutive horizontal stripes — a coloured stripe, a white stripe and a red stripe — where the coloured stripe is positioned on the left (indicating the colour of the route), the white stripe is in the middle, and the red stripe is on the right.
