01/08/2019 Uzunbodzhak Biosphere Reserve

The Uzunbudzak Biosphere Reserve covers a considerable part of the Strandja Mountain (over 78,400 ha). It is one of the most interesting and rich biodiversity regions in Bulgaria and Europe. Its territory is a natural transition between the vegetation, flora and fauna of Europe and Asia because of the terrestrial connection that existed until about 7,500 years ago at the site of the present-day Bosphorus Strait. The flora of the biosphere reserve is characterized by a large number of species that were widespread during the Tertiary (Tertiary relics). The wildlife is also remarkable for its great diversity of species. The populations of many of them are of global, European and national importance.

The fifth edition of the International initiative was opened on July 22nd in the hall of the Municipality of Karlovo with welcome notes by the deputy mayor of the Municipality of Karlovo Stoyko Karagenski, the Director of the National Nature Protection Service of the MOEW Miroslav Kalugerov, the Permanent Representation of UNESCO in Bulgaria Hristo Georgiev, Director of Central Balkan National Park Gencho Iliev, the Executive director of the Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation Rumyana Ivanova and proff. Michael Scoullos from the Greek National Committee of Man and the Biosphere Program of UNESCO. All of them greeted the young professionals from around the world who will be studying for a week on topics related to the successful development of biosphere reserves.

CBNPD has been established pursuant to Article 46, Paragraph 1 pt. 2 and Article 49 of the PAA with Order No RD-506/29. 12. 1998 - Annex No 1.5.1. (Amended with Order No RD75/03.02.2006, the Annex No 1.5.2.) of the Minister of Environment and Water, as an independent legal body under the direct authority of the Ministry of Environment and Water with headquarters in the town of Gabrovo and with the operational objective: 
 - management and guarding of the Central Balkan National Park;
 - implementation of the management plan;
 - commissioning of activities, provided for in the Management Plan and in the development plans and projects;                       
 - co-ordination and control activities, conducted by other authorities, organizations and persons;
 - monitoring of the environmental media and database maintenance;
 - imposing penalties for infringements.

According to Article 50 of the PAA, in exercise of his/her powers, the Director of CBNPD:
1. supervises the management of the national park;
2. coordinates the development of the 10-year Management Plan of the park;
3. implements the Management Plan of the NP and ensures the guarding;
4. assigns the implementation of maintenance, management, regulatory or restoration, and tourism activities in the park;
5. issues annual permits for grazing and permits for use of timber by the local population within the frames of the maintenance and regeneration activities in the forests, in accordance with the legally approved plans and projects;
6. issues permits for collection of mushrooms and wild fruits for commercial use in accordance with the development plans and projects, with the exception of such from the medicinal plants in the NP;
7. supervises the activities of the users of the forests, agricultural lands and water bodies;
8. co-ordinates and controls the implementation of the management plans concerning the scientific research work, the management and maintenance measures for the threatened species and habitats, the environmental awareness rising and education programmes, as well as other nature conservation activities implemented by other governmental institutions, municipalities, non-governmental organizations and individual persons;
9. organizes the monitoring over the quality and the components of the environment;
10. organises the operation of visitors information centres;
11. sanctions violators in the envisioned cases.
