Volunteer Initiative in Central Balkan National Park Promotes Nature Conservation and Wildfire Prevention

A volunteer and educational campaign was held in Central Balkan National Park, bringing together two important themes - caring for the mountain and preventing wildfires.
Over two consecutive days, eleven young participants, accompanied by their parents and group leaders, took part in a range of activities with Bulgarian and American participation. They had the opportunity to learn from the Park's experts, gain hands-on experience, take part in educational activities, and discover more about the biodiversity and international recognition of this protected area.
The initiative began with the restoration of the winter pole markers along the hiking route between Orlovo Gnezdo Shelter and Dermenka Hut, as well as a clean-up of the area along the trail.
The second part of the initiative focused on wildfire prevention. A discussion about the causes and consequences of wildfires, and the responsibility we all share in preventing them, was complemented by a visit to Dzhufar Dere in Steneto Reserve, where the young participants saw the impact of the 2024 wildfire firsthand.
The challenges of fighting fires in high-mountain terrain and the importance of teamwork and cooperation between institutions were also discussed.
Understanding nature and the risks it faces is the first step towards protecting the Balkan.
