March 23 – International Bear Day

23 March 2026

International Bear Day has been celebrated every year on March 23 since 1992. This day is dedicated to some of the most impressive and powerful animals on the planet – bears. The celebration originated as an initiative by environmental organizations and wildlife enthusiasts aiming to raise awareness about the conservation of different bear species around the world.

In many countries, this day is marked by educational campaigns, events, and initiatives that draw attention to the threats bears face, such as habitat loss, poaching, and climate change.

Bears play an extremely important role in ecosystems:

  • Seed dispersal – through their feeding habits, they help the growth of new plants.
  • Maintaining balance – as apex predators, they regulate populations of other animals.
  • Improving soil quality – while digging for food, they aerate the soil and help enrich it.

Without bears, many ecosystems would lose their natural balance.

In Bulgaria, the brown bear (Ursus arctos) can be found, and it is a protected species. Its main habitats are in mountainous regions – the Balkan Mountains, the Rhodopes, Rila, and Pirin.

The Bulgarian bear population is one of the most valuable in Europe, as these animals live in a relatively natural environment. However, they face challenges such as climate change, human-wildlife conflicts, and illegal hunting. Nevertheless, the conservation of bears in Bulgaria is of key importance for preserving biodiversity.

The brown bear is one of the most recognizable symbols of Central Balkan National Park. The park provides some of the best living conditions for this species in the country. Here, bears find peace away from human disturbance, suitable habitats, and a rich food base.

That is why the bear has become an emblem of the wild, untouched nature that the park protects and a symbol of Central Balkan.

International Bear Day reminds us how important these animals are for nature and how responsible we must be for their protection. The bear is not just a strong and majestic creature – it is a key element of ecosystems and a symbol of the wild.
