Photo Contest Marking 34 Years of Natura 2000
On 21 May 2026, we celebrate 34 years since the establishment of the NATURA 2000 network of protected areas in the European Union. NATURA 2000 is the largest ecological network of protected sites in Europe, created to safeguard valuable habitats, plant species, and wildlife. A total of 34.9% of Bulgaria’s territory is part of the NATURA 2000 network.
The territory of Central Balkan National Park overlaps with the protected site of the same name – BG0000494, where 31 types of natural habitats and 69 species of animals and plants are conserved. Among them are brown bear, wolf, golden eagle, peregrine falcon, saker falcon, Eurasian sparrowhawk, yellow-bellied toad, European bee-eater, black woodpecker, and many others.
NATURA 2000 helps us protect the nature that sustains our lives – clean air, water, soils, and essential natural resources. For local communities, NATURA 2000 creates opportunities for livelihoods and development, while farmers gain access to European funding and compensation for nature-friendly practices. Investments in sustainable approaches support the economic development of local regions and preserve natural wealth for future generations.
On this occasion, the Directorate of Central Balkan National Park announces a photography contest for images taken within the territory of the National Park, designated as protected site BG0000494 “Central Balkan” under the Birds Directive and the Habitats Directive.
The aim of the photo contest is to showcase the beauty, richness, and diversity of nature, as well as the importance of the protected areas within the NATURA 2000 ecological network. Through the power and impact of photography, participants are encouraged to capture unique wildlife, plants, and landscapes. The initiative seeks to raise public awareness about biodiversity conservation and the role of protected areas in safeguarding natural heritage for future generations.
