40 years since the declaration of the Severen (North) DzhendemReserve.

30 September 2023
Severen Dzhendem - the reserve with the highest average altitude in the Park, is located near the town of Apriltsi. It was declared on September 30, 1983 to preserve distinct ecosystems as well as the rock and karst formations that can be seen here. Its area is 1610 hectares.
Severen Dzhendem covers part of the northern slopes of the Central Stara Planina in the watershed of the Vidima River. The low and middle parts of the slopes of Mount Botev are located on the territory of the reserve. The relief is highly fragmented and rich in rock formations, often difficult to pass. Along with the numerous valleys and ridges, there are also extensive grasslands and forest massifs. Among the riches of Severen Dzhendem are nearly 30 waterfalls with a height of over 20 meters. The most impressive of them is Vidimsko praskalo waterfall.
More than 2/3 of the territory is covered with centuries-old forests. Beech and beech-fir forests are characteristic. Rare and endangered species have survived only in this natural fortress and nowhere else in Bulgaria. The unusual community of Siberian juniper, myrtle-leaved rhododendron and blueberry has been preserved. The connection with the other reserve - Dzhendema on the south, makes it part of a vast promised land - a refuge for the wild goat, the bear, the wolf, the red deer, the roe deer, the golden eagle, the peregrine falcon and the peregrine falcon.
Severen Dzhendem is extremely difficult to access. Visitors can enjoy its beauty along the constructed eco-paths - Vidimsko praskalo, The water holes and On the path of the Balkans.
Only pedestrian crossing on the marked paths is allowed through the reserve.
