A griffon vulture released in the Central Balkan National Park has been observed in Serbia

05 June 2023
A griffon vulture released in the Central Balkan National Park has been observed in Serbia. On May 31, conservationist Sasha Marinkovic reported an unknown griffon vulture with blue wingtips and yellow EE markings registered in the Uvac Reserve, Serbia. After checking, it turned out to be bird released in 2022 from the adaptation aviary in the locality of Shopov egrek, Central Balkan National Park. After its release, the bird was kept and settled permanently in the area of the aviary, where it was last recorded on April 30, 2022.

The distance traveled between the release site and the surveillance in Serbia is 430 km. Of course, the bird has not moved between the two points in a straight line since the month it began wandering.

The griffon vulture EE, named "Plamak" (Flame), was hatched at the Green Balkans Wildlife Rescue Center in 2021 and donated for release in the Central Balkan National Park.

The activities on the release of the griffon vultures were carried out within the framework of a contract with the subject "Maintenance of a feeding site and adaptation aviary for large birds of prey in the NPCB" from project #BG16M1OP002-3.007-0006 "Restoration and protection of natural habitats and species in the NPCB" , approved by Order No.RD-OP-96/26.09.2018 of the Minister of Environment and Water, under the Operational Program "Environment 2014-2020", with the financial support of the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund.
