Central Balkan National Park Directorate organizes the cleaning of objects in the protected territory on the occasion of June 5

05 June 2023
Employees of the Central Balkan National Park Directorate participated in a campaign to clean up objects in the protected territory characterized by increased attendance. On Friday, June 2, the area of the Haydushka pesen hut in the territory of the village of Chiflik was cleaned. Employees from the "Troyan" Park Section and from the Park Directorate in the city of Gabrovo took part in the action. The following day - Saturday, cleaning was carried out along the high mountain pass Troyan - Karnare, in its southern part, by representatives of the "Control and Security" Department, Park sections "Karlovo" and "Klisura". The place, along with the turn-offs along the road, are a prerequisite for unregulated waste disposal, and this is another action by Park officials in the area.

Along with the cleaning and removal of the waste, signs were placed inviting visitors to the protected area not to pollute the environment. The Directorate of the National Park calls for environmental commitment and a conscious stay in Central Balkan.

The campaign was carried out in conjunction with the commemoration of June 5 - World Environment Day, coordinated by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), which has been held annually since 1974. The theme of World Environment Day 2023 focuses on on solutions to plastic pollution as part of the #BeatPlasticPollution campaign.

World Environment Day is a reminder that people's actions on plastic pollution matter. The steps governments and businesses are taking to tackle plastic pollution are a consequence of this action. It is time to accelerate the transition to a circular economy. It's time to beat plastic pollution.

The world is flooded with plastic. More than 400 million tons of plastic are produced each year, half of which are designed to be used only once. Of these, less than 10 percent is recycled. An estimated 19-23 million tons of plastic products end up in lakes, rivers and seas. Today, plastic clogs our landfills, flows into the ocean and burns in toxic fumes, making it one of the most serious threats to the planet.

Less well known is that microplastics find their way into the food we eat, the water we drink, and even the air we breathe. Many plastic products contain dangerous additives that can pose a threat to our health.

The good news is that we have the science and the solutions to tackle the problem – and a lot is already happening. What is most needed now is for governments, companies and other stakeholders to join forces to resolve this crisis. This underlines the importance of this World Environment Day, which mobilizes action from every corner of the world.

World Environment Day 2023 will show how countries, businesses and people are learning to use the material more sustainably, offering hope that plastic pollution will one day be history.
