15 May 2023

On May 10, 2023 in the town of Sopot, Central Balkan National Park Directorate held an eco-educational initiative with students from the third, fourth and fifth grade from the secondary school "Ivan Vazov" - town of Sopot.

The children were divided into four groups, each of them going through separate thematic stations. In a game format, the children learned about food chains and how to connect them in food webs, how to identify tree species, profile a tree, use a tuber and altimeter, animal relationships by simulating predator-prey relationships (owls and dormice), etc.

Nearly 60 children and four class teachers participated in the initiative. The event was taken outside the school grounds to the recreation area above the town, just before the approaches to the national park. Four staff members from the Central Balkan National Park Directorate participated.

The event was a continuation of the information meetings held last year with teachers from the municipalities around the national park and the opportunities for partnerships and joint initiatives discussed.

The students participated in a talk about the importance of the national park and its distinctions, with a focus on the UNESCO World Heritage serial site "Ancient and Primitive Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe".
