Edelweiss Monitoring in Kozya Stena Reserve.
Edelweiss is one of the most iconic alpine plants and a well-known symbol of mountaineering and climbing. Park experts recently carried out field monitoring of the species in Kozya Stena Strict Nature Reserve, home to one of the edelweiss populations within Central Balkan National Park. The survey aimed to assess the current condition of the population and the habitat it occupies as part of the Park's ongoing efforts to study and conserve its rich plant diversity and valuable natural habitats.
Within the Park, edelweiss grows on steep limestone and dolomite cliffs, scree slopes and eroded rocky terrain. Although it is typically associated with high mountain cliffs, it can also be found in forested areas of Central Balkan National Park.
Edelweiss is listed as an endangered species in the Red Data Book of the Republic of Bulgaria and is protected under Annex No. 3 of the Biodiversity Act. Collecting, cutting, uprooting or destroying plants in their natural habitat is prohibited, as are the possession, transport, trade, sale or exchange of specimens taken from the wild.
Let us admire this remarkable flower where nature has preserved it, and leave it to continue blooming in its natural home.
