The beech forests of the Central Balkan National Park will be presented at the session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Paris

08 July 2025
The Central Balkan National Park Directorate (CBNP) will present its unique and preserved beech forests as one of the components of the Serial World Heritage Site “Old and Primary Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions in Europe” during the 47th session of the World Heritage Committee of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The beech forests of the 9 reserves of the CBNP have been part of the serial site since 2017 and, with a total area of nearly 11,000 ha, are the largest component of the Site. They represent extremely valuable ecosystems that have survived since the end of the last ice age. These forests are important for biodiversity and for the conservation of rare and endangered species. The inclusion of these forest massifs in the UNESCO World Heritage List is one of the most significant international recognitions of Bulgaria’s remarkable nature and a high assessment of the Central Balkan National Park.

The 47th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee was officially opened at the organization’s headquarters in Paris yesterday – July 7. This year, Bulgaria is honored to chair the session of the World Heritage Committee.

As part of the accompanying program of the event, with a live broadcast, the July issue of the magazine “LIK”, inspired by UNESCO, was also presented. The magazine presents all ten cultural and natural Bulgarian sites, part of the World Heritage.
