The youngest reserve in the Central Balkan celebrates its 38th anniversary today
On this day, December 22, the “Kozya Stena” Reserve was established—the smallest of all nine reserves in the Central Balkan National Park. It was declared in order to protect the rare edelweiss and the centuries-old beech–fir forests within its boundaries, and it offers its visitors breathtaking views and an unforgettable encounter with wilderness.
The reserve is located entirely on the northern slopes between Kozya Stena Peak and Ushite Peak. Its terrain is highly rugged, shaped by steep cliffs, deep ravines, river streams, and rock formations.
Although its area is only 900 hectares, a significant number of plant and animal species can be found within the territory of “Kozya Stena,” including an impressive number of species with conservation status.
When speaking about the flora and fauna of “Kozya Stena,” it is impossible not to mention the edelweiss—the symbol of mountain tourism. Every visitor setting out along the ridge routes here secretly hopes to see this beautiful plant, but should not forget that it is listed in the Red Data Book of Bulgaria with the status “Endangered” and is protected by law. We also cannot fail to mention the wild goat, for which the reserve is one of the preferred habitats within the Park.
If you have not yet visited the “Kozya Stena” Reserve, do not miss the opportunity to do so—it will certainly not disappoint you and will remain in your heart!
