Today we celebrate 72 years since the declaration of the Djendema Reserve
28 March 2025
On this date in 1953, in order to protect valuable species and their habitats, the "Djendema" reserve was declared. Over the years, it has undergone several changes in the size of its area and today the protected territory occupies 4220.2 ha. It is "Djendema" that is the largest reserve within the "Central Balkans".
With the strictest level of protection, according to Bulgarian legislation, it protects and preserves a rich biological diversity of both plant and animal species, but also the diverse habitats that they inhabit. The characteristic landscapes, composed of an unforgettable mix of majestic, almost untouched by man forests, spacious pastoral meadows, mighty, impressive rock crowns, steep slopes, deep canyons, as well as breathtaking waterfalls and sparkling rivers, are also protected in "Djendema" and complement the wonderful feeling of this part of the Balkans.
At the same time inaccessible and attractive, the Dzhendema reserve inspires awe in everyone who has touched it. With its picturesque eco-trails, impressive rock formations and memorable landscapes, the reserve annually attracts thousands of tourists who, daring to enter hell (from Turkish dzhendem – hell), discover the magnificence of its nature and the magical power of the mountain to remain forever in people's hearts.
