We are celebrating 33 years since the declaration of the Central Balkan National Park with the exhibition View of the Balkans

31 October 2024
Central Balkan National Park is one of the most valuable and largest European protected areas. It was created in 1991 to preserve for the benefit of society the unique nature of the Middle Stara Planina and the traditions and livelihoods associated with it.

Within the borders of the National Park there are 9 reserves - Boatin, Tsarichina, Kozya Stena, Steneto, Stara Reka, Dzhendema, Severen Dzhendem, Peeshti skali and Sokolna. The park is one of the last refuges in Europe of rare and endangered animals - wolf, golden retriever, otter, wild cat, of the mighty ruler of the mountain - the brown bear, symbol of the park. Forests - natural, centuries-old, are among the most valuable treasures of the protected territory.

Central Balkan is a paradise for its wild inhabitants, but also an attractive place for visitors. The management of the Park has created conditions for people to communicate with nature without damaging it. The protected area offers an opportunity for full relaxation, spiritual enrichment and rest.
In 2006, "Central Balkan" became a certified member of the Federation of European Natural and National Parks (EUROPARC). In 2009, the National Park was awarded the European Diploma for Protected Areas - the first and only winner of the prestigious international award in Bulgaria.

In 2017, Central Balkan, together with the territory of five adjacent municipalities - Troyan, Sevlievo, Pavel Banya, Karlovo and Anton, were announced as Central Balkan Biosphere Park within the UNESCO Program "Man and the Biosphere".

Again in 2017, the most representative beech forests in the nine reserves of the National Park became part of the serial UNESCO World Heritage site - Old and primary beech forests of the Carpathians and other regions of Europe.

On the occasion of the 33rd anniversary of Central Balkan, the Directorate of the park opened an exhibition entitled "View of the Balkans", which collected 15 selected photographs from the amateur photography competition held this year. Among those present today were current and former employees, authors of photographs, friends of the Park. The exhibition will be open until November 12 in Hristo Tsokev, Gabrovo.
