According to popular belief, St. Andrew's Day is also called Mechkinden (The bear's day). The legend tells that St. Andrew was the only one of the apostles who did not have a holiday, so he mounted a bear and went to God. The Lord told him "Whoever does not celebrate you, let your horse ride him". Therefore, on November 30, in certain regions of Bulgaria, they boil corn and transfer it through the chimney, shouting: "To you, bear, boiled corn, don't eat the raw and don't eat the goods and the people."
Other folk legends tell about the recluse Saint Andrew who lived in the mountains. You had a field that provided him with all earthly goods. Once, however, a bear ate the only ox with which he plowed the hard ground. Andrei got angry and harnessed the bear to the plow, and from then on the saint became the master of the bears. Therefore, today's big holiday is also known as Mechkinden(The bear's day).
The Bulgarian people celebrate St. Andrew's Day as a holiday of the seed (the grain). This day is associated with the understanding that the light in the day begins to grow - it grows, that's why somewhere it is called Edreevden, and the sun moves "like a chicken in an egg", every day less the day increases as much as a grain of millet.
On the occasion of the holiday, the children of the 3rd grade at Vasil Levski Secondary School - Apriltsi town prepared and presented to the Central Balkan National Park Directorate a collage on the theme "The bear, known or unknown", where this majestic animal is depicted in the way by which children's eyes see him.
The Park Directorate expresses special thanks to the children and their class teacher!
